100 movies in a year 2012
1.Newsies----A musical based on the New York City newsboy strike of 1899. When young newspaper sellers are exploited beyond reason by their bosses they set out to enact change and are meet by the ruthlessness of big business. (from IMDB) Jack Kelly: There's a lot of people out there, and they ain't just gonna go away. They got voices now and they're goin' to be listened to. Putting them in jail is not going to stop them. That's the power of the press, Joe. So thanks for teaching me about it. My thoughts: I can't believe this is the first time I saw this movie! I love Disney and musicals so I figured I should see it before my head exploded (and Devon freaked because it is one of his favorite movies). And I loved it! The acting was great (a bb Christian Bale) and the songs were fun and catchy (especially King of New York and the song at the very beginning) the story was moving and fast paced. I like historical pieces and it is sad to think that kids in this country were honestly treated that way. I would recommend this movie to anyone that loves musicals and pure old school Disney. an A+ all the way!
2.American Psycho---A wealthy New York investment banking executive hides his alternate psychopathic ego from his co-workers and friends as he escalates deeper into his illogical, gratuitous fantasies. (from IMDB) Patrick Bateman: That's a very fine chardonnay you're drinking. I want you to clean your vagina. My thoughts: Is this going to be the year of Christian Bale? Honestly I did not like this movie at all. It was far to violent and vague. I know that was a bit of the point but still... also I wished it was a little less rushed. I think there were some great characters that could have been developed a little more (I have never read the book so maybe those characters don't really have a back story). I just wish there was a little bit of closure to the whole movie but it just left me uncomfortable. I give it a D
3.Groundhog Day---A weatherman finds himself living the same day over and over again.(From IMDB) Phil: Well, what if there is no tomorrow? There wasn't one today. My thoughts: Finally a movie without Bale! This was an interesting film. Not quite a comedy but not quite a drama either. I think repeat viewings would more then likely enrich the film experience, which is not a bad thing. The big plus about this movie is that I have never seen anything quite like it and in Hollywood that is very rare. My only negative is that it seemed Phil just woke up one day and decided he loved Rita for no real reason at all. But maybe I just missed something. I give it a B-
4.Spanglish---A woman and her daughter emigrate from Mexico for a better life in America, where they start working for a family where the patriarch is a newly celebrated chef with an insecure wife. (from IMDB) John Clasky: Worrying about your kids is sanity, and being that sane... can drive you nuts. My thoughts: The first non-comedy (apart from American Psycho but lets forget that one)I think this was a little undiscovered gem, as I have not heard much about it going into it. I think that helped, this movie is a bit about discovery and setting aside yourself for the betterment of those around you. The Spanish speaking mother (Flor) was the only real downfall for me. I found her character to be selfish and her daughter to be extremely unselfish for a child. But the true plus of this movie was Adam Sandlers acting. Who knew he honestly had range? Not me so that was a pleasant surprise. I give it a B
5.Any Given Sunday---"Any Given Sunday" is a behind the scenes look at the life and death struggles of modern day gladiators and those who lead them. (from IMDB) Tony D'Amato: On any given Sunday you're gonna win or you're gonna lose. The point is - can you win or lose like a man? My thoughts: So a football movie...lets just pretend for a second that I actually know something about the game, maybe just maybe I would have liked this movie. But from the standpoint of someone who knows nothing about football it kinda sucked. But the thing that made this movie work for me was Al Pacino. The man could read the phone book and it would be amazing. Plus the ending was amazing and a complete surprise so for those two reasons alone I gave it a C+
6.Moneyball---The story of Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane's successful attempt to put together a baseball club on a budget by employing computer-generated analysis to draft his players. John Henry: I know you are taking it in the teeth, but the first guy through the wall... he always gets bloody... always. This is threatening not just a way of doing business... but in their minds, it's threatening the game. Really what it's threatening is their livelihood, their jobs. It's threatening the way they do things... and every time that happens, whether it's the government, a way of doing business, whatever, the people who are holding the reins - they have their hands on the switch - they go batshit crazy. My thoughts: I know very little about the inside workings of Baseball and even less about math but I loved this movie! It was fast paced and funny and touching all at the same time. The only think I disliked about this movie was the ending but that isn't really fair since it is based on a true story and life isn't always what you hope for but this man truly changed the game. Also another great thing about this movie was the editing. I give it an A+
7.Bull Durham---A fan who has an affair with one minor-league baseball player each season meets an up-and-coming pitcher and the experienced catcher assigned to him Annie Savoy: [narrating] Walt Whitman once said, "I see great things in baseball. It's our game, the American game. It will repair our losses and be a blessing to us." You could look it up My thoughts: Wow all these sports movies! I really enjoyed this movie. It was sweet with an attitude. The acting was great. Kevin Costner was cute and it was funny. Sometimes it out there for me and Susan Saradon annoys me sometimes,in this one she was just a little to flakey and trying a little to hard to be different so I give it a B+
8.Animal House---At a 1962 College, Dean Vernon Wormer is determined to expel the entire Delta Tau Chi Fraternity, but those troublemakers have other plans for him. (from IMDB) Otter: They kicked us out of school? That makes sense My thoughts: This is a hard movie for me to review, basically it is a mindless comedy. No pearls of wisdom no deep message. Just funny. I give it a B-
9.Cinderfella--- This was Jerry Lewis' answer to the classic Cinderella story. When his father dies, poor Fella is left at the mercy of his snobbish stepmother and her two no-good sons Cinderfella: [Fella reading from the engraving on a ring] To Fella: Love thy neighbor. Love him hard and well. The love that you give will be returned and manifested in itself, to give back the warmth and the care and the affection, as well as the hugs and the loves of those who have loved. To live and not to love could be affectionate, but yet warmth would still maintain itself in the love that you give to them. Oh, others have loved in the past and yet have found that they couldn't be hate. So with love it is the beneficial part of giving. Many children in the past have loved and yet found that they couldn't possibly know anyone with kissing and wisdom with hugging... My thoughts: This was very cute. I have never seen a Jerry Lewis movie before, and I think it is safe to say he inspired Jim Carry. But Jerry did it better. He is a really funny guy and I look forward to watching more of his movies.
10.Abduction---A thriller centered on a young man who sets out to uncover the truth about his life after finding his baby photo on a missing persons website. (from IMDB) My thoughts: This movie was awful! The plot was...odd and not paced well. The chemistry with the two leads was not there at all. And as much as I hate to say this Taylor's acting was so wooden, I expected better. He was to young for this role I think it would have been better suited for someone in his 20s. This was just not the right role for Taylor D-
11. American Pie---Four teenage boys enter a pact to lose their virginity by prom night. (from IMBD) Victoria 'Vicky': I want it to be the right time, the right place... Jessica: It's not a space shuttle launch, it's SEX. My thoughts: It had actually had far more heart then I expected. Is it raunchy, yeah but it is realistic. I think it depecits sex fairly. The characters are charming, the jokes are funny and the story does have it's sweet moments. I give it a B+
12.American Pie 2---The continuing bawdy adventures of a group of friends reuniting after their first year of college. (from IMDB) Kevin: My brother said by the end of the summer I'll get the big picture. And I see it. No matter what, times change, things are different. But the problem is, I don't want them to be. My thoughts: Again I was surprised! I thought "Okay a sequel they never know when to quit" but I liked this one better then the first one! Again it had a huge heart to it. I think everyone should give these movies a chance. It was funny, sweet and fun. I give it an A-
13.American Wedding---The third film in the American Pie series deals with the wedding of Jim and Michelle and the gathering of their families and friends, including Jim's old friends from high school and Michelle's little sister. (from IMDB) Michelle: Love isn't just a feeling. It's shaving your balls. My thoughts: This one wasn't as good as the other 2 but see above for my thoughts on this series. I give it a B-
14.Scent of a Women---A prep school student needing money agrees to "babysit" a blind man, but the job is not at all what he anticipated. (from IMDB) Lt. Col. Frank Slade: Oh, where do I go from here, Charlie? Charlie Simms: If you're tangled up, just tango on. Lt. Col. Frank Slade: You askin' me to dance, Charlie My thoughts: Beautiful. That is the first word that comes to mind involving this movie. The acting was flawless,Al Pacino's character was just...I can't even explain it us something that just has to be seen. I had to pause the movie at one point and collect myself because the tears were flowing. For the rest of this year, this will be the movie I compare all others to as a point of reference for grading these movies. I give it an A+ without a doubt
